Mantis in the Garden

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Do you see him? Or her? This little bugger hides REALLY well. Almost impossible to see. Great garden companion though.
DSC_0920Look carefully in the upper left corner. Two leaves from the left… sitting right there… see ‘em?

How about this… can you ‘em now?
MantisPageThere’s only one that we found this day, but I have been finding at least two in my garden. I call them the eyes that are watching me. These little buggies are incredibly attentive! They can hear and see me or anyone else in my household way before you’d expect them too. As a matter of fact, my dogs were playing right next to the fence while I was working on these shots and this little guys head kept a watch on them! He was WATCHING them! Really neat to see… and a tad creepy.

The kids love to spot them in the garden! They will tiptoe through the gate and all but crawl around to see if they can spot a mantis before it hides. We found a little bit of information in our brand new science books for next year about praying mantis and they were all so excited. I think we will be starting science a lot earlier than any of us thought.

I wonder what a mantis is thinking about when they are watching dogs play? Or better yet… my camera?!

At any rate, I hope any of them feel welcome in my garden and stay all season!

Yeah, I'd say creepy, too. Eeee. But it has a purpose. Nice shots, btw.

I'm fascinated by them. Now you are always going to feel like you're being watched every time you're in the garden. LOL!

Thank you for visiting my blog today--it is appreciated! I haven't seen a mantis in my garden in a long time--I guess I don't have what it likes to eat here, but they are fascinating to watch.

How lovely. I've had just about every insect I can think of in my garden BUT a praying mantis. Someday . . .

Thanks for linking up! I actually fed one some a smidgen of lunchmeat and he took it from me and sat there eating it!

I caught a praying mantis sparring with a cardinal last year. I had my camera handy and I posted the pic on my blog. We haven't seen him since so hopefully the bird didn't get him. http://www.familybalancesheet.org/2010/09/calling-all-gardeners-name-that-bug.html
