Santa OOPS!

Thursday, February 03, 2011

My Hubbie loves to live up the Santa dream. (I think it has something to do with a plate of cookies?) I grew up without Santa. Didn't really bother me and it wasn't because my parents are mean. They both were busy and it just never really came up. Life was busy. Traditions aren't really their cup of tea either and that's not a crime.

At any rate, this is the SECOND year I have almost sabotaged my Hubbie's hold on Santa with our kids. I might get the hang of this by the time our youngest is old enough? Maybe....

So what did I do this time? I got overly excited is all! I can't stand the suspense of a gift! I have to see an exuberant face somewhere so I told our oldest two what we got for the younger kiddos. They filled my excitement quota and I forgot that I shared this little secret. (They kept the secret too!) Then I was sitting on our bed in Awe of Hubbie's wrapping skills and he decided which gifts would be from Santa, not knowing that I already spilled the beans. ARGH! Are you seeing where this is going? Christmas morning was about to be ruined! Double ARGH!

Fortunately one of the oldest whispered an excited reminder of a gift we had gotten and bells went off for me that we had labeled those from Santa! I screamed like I had a spider chasing me, which made everyone else scream, and I hurried to inform Hubbie my error. He just so happened to already be looking for me curious about a spider. Hehehe... I'll never live that one down!

We never did repair the error of labels but we did allocate some other goodies to the Santa stash. If any of the kids happen to ask, "Did I get this from Santa?" I just put on a perplexed look and state, "Wow, I don't remember! There were so many cool gifts this year." Which I think I should be offended that no one questions my memory with this statement.

Maybe next year I will be better? They are bound to catch on sooner or later though. They are all growing up sooo fast! I feel something should move in to the place of Santa. I might have the kids do a gift exchange! Yah! They'd draw names from a hat, we would give them a certain amount of cash to take shopping and they would have to stay in budget but get "the perfect gift." Ooooo! I'm excited for next year now!!!

What traditions are you hanging on to with your kids? Do you make new ones to replace the old?

New follower here! Stopping by from the February Blog Hop!

My youngest (9) just figured out the Santa scam last year. I was a bit sad that I couldn't just lie to her, but it wouldn't have done me any good. She's one smart cookie. Now instead of baking cookies for Santa, we cook and eat them that night together.

My oldest is 7 and I think she is starting to figure out Santa. Today as we were walking through a store she said to me "I don't think the elves make all the presents because the tags on some of my gifts said Made in China." I didn't know how to respond so I just said "Oh, that's interesting." I think it is only a matter of time before she figures it out.
