I am Not Reading 50 Shades of Grey

A twitter buddy (If I follow you on twitter and we tweet a conversation… you are my buddy. Hehe… ) of mine, Sawickis from Saving Dollars and Cents, created a post taking a stand as to why she is NOT reading 50 Shades of Grey. In her post she stated, “I felt like I was alone when I decided they weren’t for me.” Well, I’m here to say she’s not alone. I’ve told many people face-to-face that I do not intend to read them. And I mentioned on twitter that I never thought to say anything about it online.

I will admit that when this book first came out, I was intrigued but something felt wrong. There was so much hype about it and everyone seemed to love the book so much that I was curious what it was about still. I read a few reviews online and was immediately turned off to the idea of ever reading a book like that.

See, I realized at a VERY young age in my reading career that there are just some books best left on the shelf for me. I am the type of person who reads something and takes it to heart. Each story I read becomes a part of my story and will even shape my everyday activities. For example, if I am reading a high tension book I tend to be on edge a LOT and snap at my kids too much. If I am reading a spy or horror story, I start looking over my shoulder all the time and have troubles sleeping at night. Sooooo… with all that in mind I am careful about my reading selections. I push the envelope sometime because, well, I am an adult and can try to control my emotions more. But I am also a woman with a lot of emotions that tend to run away with me sometimes. I always tell Hubby that’s why he loves me. Hehe…

Also an even bigger reason for NOT reading this book is due to the fact that I have always felt an intimate moment between a husband and wife should be just that. Intimate. What is the definition of that word? I think society has completely lost sight of it.

A few definitions of that word Intimate:
  - very private; closely personal
  - deeply personal, private, or secret

I am so sick of seeing every little detail of a private (and often indecent) moment between a man and a woman (married or not) plastered on bill boards, ads, TV and movies. Sick of it. This book is one more example of how to not allow anyone any decent amount of privacy in their love life. One more way to kill that special bond between a husband and wife.

Right… I was on a soap box. Stepping down now. Hehe… Got a tad bit carried away there. (blushing)

Book Basket/Bag - Found an OLD Favorite!

Mood: Sick

Weather: Warm!

I am not feeling well at all today. Horrible sinus headache and all the fun that goes with it. Ugh! Will be VERY thankful for our air conditioning when it gets fixed up to start working this summer. I am also looking forward to our low electric bill for the month since we've not had air conditioning though. :) Hehehe...

Where the Sidwalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
This book cracks me up. One of our kiddos has the Ickle Me poem basically memorized now. Very fun!

Princess Prissypants Wished the World Pink by Ashley Putnam Evans
Very cute little book! The kiddos were surprised by the ending. Not the best book for reading with little boys... but... well... HAHAHHA

Katy Duck Is a Caterpillar by Alyssa Satin Capucilli
I really think this story is cute. I like that it shows how you can find something very unexpected with a role you might get in a play, recital, etc too. Lots of fun and perfect for spring!

Puppy Mudge Has a Snack by Cynthia Rylant
Mommie took a break and had someone else read this one. Hehhehe...

A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle
Repeat book here because we've read this before, but I love hermies!!! We have land hermies though, but their cousins are fun to read about too. :)

The Peanut Butter Hamster and Other Animal Tails by Grace Fox Anderson
This was one of MY favorites growing up and it's perfect for the kiddos now. I found it buried in the back of a cupboard recently and I'm so thrilled to have found it!! We will be reading this one for awhile because each chapter is a new story. They are short and GREAT for bedtime reading.


We read a lot more than this throughout the week too. These are just the highlights really. Hehe...

The Book Basket - Or Bag in Our Case

Weather: Lovely!

While the kiddos sit behind me pretending to be story teller and the little seedling babies are out on the patio, I have decided to make another "book basket" post. I actually am using a reuseable shopping bag for our books right now. YAY! I might pick up a book box that they have available at the library the next time I am there though.

The Duchess Bakes a Cake by Virginia Kahl
An absolutely adorable story that holds the kiddos attention quiet well! I actually thought the cake was going to blow up or some horrible thing would happen, so I was glad it all ended well.

Who's Toes are Those by Joyce Elias
I snagged this one when I knocked over the whole display of Where the Sidewalk Ends. HAHAHA I guess maybe even I should not be allowed in the library? Sigh...
At any rate, the book was worth it. So very cute! It's little riddles to make you guess what the animal on the next page is while all you can see are their toes.

Fritz and the Beautiful Horses by Jan Brett
Awesome illustrations as well as a sweet story. The kiddos and I really felt bad for Fritz but so glad that the moral of the story (being gentle, dependable and kind) came out true and rewarded.

Kittens First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
Sooo cute! Poor kitten... great book to take the time to discuss the phases of the moon when you are done laughing at this crazy cat. :)

Franklin Fibs by Paulette Bourgeois
Yah... self explanatory title there... we are working with a fibber issue. Makes me wonder what I can do to make up a fake fly pie. HAHAH

Pony Pals Series by Jeanne Betancourt
We've actually been reading this series for a little while. We are on book 4 of the series. They are easy readers, short chapters and all the kiddos get really pulled in to the story. The common response when I finish a chapter is, "Awwwwww!!! One more PLEASE!" I buy these books because I intend to have the kiddos go back through them again on their own later. :)

What's in your book... ummm... space!

Weather: Loving It!

I have been inspired to post about the books we intend to read for school this week. We do not have a box or even a bag to keep our books in though because I just keep them on my desk. I never have many books out from the library at one time either. I have a horrible track record of not returning them on time! :O

I am a tad frustrated with the fact that I can only put 5 books on hold at a time with my library , but it works out okay. I just have 5 books to focus on until the following week when we can get our next 5 that were on hold. I do not have the patience to haul all of us into the library while I peruse for books to checkout anymore. It's suppose to be QUIET in the library right? Hehehehe...


Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel
I grew up reading these books at my Grandma's house over the summer. She would always enroll me in her library's book program while I was there and would bring home stacks of books for me to read. Frog and Toad are like a classic to me now. HAHA

I Love You, Little One by Nancy Tafuri
The illustrations in this book (and others by this author) are just wonderful! I must admit that we really love this book fot it's beautiful illustrations. :) The story is very sweet too.

Emily's Birthday by Else Holmelund Minarik
I am not overly fond of Little Bear videos, but the books appear to be good. This is a cute story about Little Bear preparing a party for a friend. It's nice to see that there are some limits to having everything perfect sometimes. The book does point out that you need to think ahead when trying to plan an event like this, something my kiddos sometimes forget. Hehehe

Marshmellow by Clare Newberry
This story is adorable and oh so true about having a bunny in your home! Granted, not all buns will get along with the household cat like Oliver and Marshmellow do, but my bun and kitties interact quite a bit without incident. I would never recommend leaving a rabbit and cat unsupervised though. I love the cute little poems too.

Yertle the Turtle by Dr Seuss
Need anymore be said? This Dr Seuss story has some real meat to it is all, but it's just as zany and crazy as any other Seuss story. Fun read!


Most of these books were taken from someone else's reading list this week (The Happy Housewife). Hehehe... I read her reveiws and thought it would be fun to check them out too.

(Note: I am working on a post about my square foot garden... for some reason I talk about the plants, but do not have any pictures of the whole garden up. HAHA Silly me!)
