Band Bracelets are Dangerous!

Thursday, April 07, 2011

And they are no where near fun at 5am. There’s a lot of different brands of these rubber band/silicone band bracelets and they can be a lot of fun to collect and can be dangerous! My older children have collections of these ranging from skateboards and bikes to baked goods and dresses and I never gave them much thought. I always told them to take them off at night and put them up on their dressers. No problem. Until…

One of our middle kiddos, Sweet Pea, who was not allowed to have their collection in their room due to not putting them away at night caused a bit of panic. This is my wandering night owl that I have to keep an eye on. I don’t know where the ideas of emptying the sock drawer, piling stuffed animals in the bed or playing with blocks in the closet come from but this is the one that will do it. This is also one of my kiddos that wakes crying in the night and we never always know why. I believe it is their medication… more on that another time.

Well, one night (quite awhile ago) Sweet Pea awoke crying like usual and I went in there in an attempt to comfort but wasn’t getting anywhere. I did finally get this little one to calm down and back to sleep only to have them up again in half an hour. I just kept having this feeling that there was something more wrong but wasn’t sure what to do. I was already sleep deprived from Baby Squeaks waking every few hours. I decided to do a body check and noticed a hand that was soft, swollen. When I pulled Sweet Pea out of bed into the hallway light I found a hand almost 3x the size it should have been! A band bracelet wrapped around it so tightly it was cutting off circulation to the hand! I had to cut the bracelet off even! My little one had wrapped the bracelet around their wrist two times, for whatever reason!

This is a picture of the little hand in the morning AFTER all the happened.
(Yes, I took this picture almost 3 months ago and am just now getting around to posting it. SIGH!)

Always be careful with these fun toys. I am so glad the little hand was not permanently damaged. It took quite awhile for it to get back to it’s regular size though. Now I am adamant with this little one to follow the rules. I also do a complete check of Sweet Pea when I head to bed at night to make sure there’s Bassgiraffe's Thoughts Thursday Blog Hopnothing foreign in the bed. I feel guilty for not doing this as thoroughly before. Why wait for the accident to happen when things can be prevented?! Ergh…. We also have necklaces to keep the bands on. I don't want ANY of the kids wearing them anymore.

I am linking this post up to Blog Hop Thursday over at BassGiraffe's Thoughts. Head over there to find some more blogs to check out today, or link up and join in. It's easy!

Oh wow! I had never thought much about it either. I'm so glad Sweet Pea is ok. Thanks for the warning!

We had a similar experience in that Sarah put lots of them on her wrist at bedtime with the same effect. It didn't get nearly as bad as Sweet Pea's did but it wasn't pretty either and really freaked mama out. She also regularly gets out of bed and gets toys after we put her to bed. She's very quiet and sneaky about it.
